I wasn’t going to voice my opinion on this, but it’s gotten to the point where I’m frustrated and I want to vent. So here goes my rant.
I keep seeing male Doctor Who fans complaining that the only reason female fans don’t like the new doctor is because they don’t find him sexually attractive. And posts hoping that the “sexualization of Doctor Who” will end with 11.
What’s that you say? You don’t like it when ladies find male characters attractive? These male portrayals make you uncomfortable? Oh, I’M SORRY. I can’t hear you over the sound of you being a hypocrite.
Seriously, I’m tired of people bashing female fans (many of whom have legitimate concerns over the choice of the new doctor) and reducing their opinions down to “fangirl whining” and “oh well, they must just be mad cause he’s not a hip young dude that they can fantasize over”. (And that was a nicer choice of words than something I read earlier.)
First of all, why is it okay for male fans to fantasize over female characters, but not the other way around? From female comics, anime, and game characters in skimpy outfits, to products of said characters in compromising positions. It’s all over the media, in every con and we as females are told to accept it.
Yet, the moment they introduce a male character that is the slightest bit feminine or doesn’t match up to some male standard of manliness it’s looked down on. You see it all the time with the modern era Final Fantasy games. Guys that are uncomfortable with the more feminine male characters, some even going so far as to say that you aren’t a true Final Fantasy fan if you like those games. Others have complained over the change in art style of Cloud, blaming it on “fangirls ruining the franchise”.
But lets bring this back to Doctor Who. I am now seeing people accusing fans who are upset over the choice and who are fans of the last 3 doctors, of not being real Who fans, because all of the previous doctors had been older men. Maybe some girls prefer a younger doctor, but that does not make them any less of a real fan. It’s their right to prefer 11 just as much as it is yours to prefer 4. (just an example)
Those that are fangirl bashing are also dismissing two other points: 1. Females aren’t the only ones upset over the choice and 2. the concern over the lack of diversity in the decision is a valid concern.
I won’t get into that myself, because I’ve already written a novel here, plus I think this article probably explains it better than I can. So I’ll just leave this here. http://boobtubedude.com/index.php/2013/08/04/theories/doctor-who-has-a-new-lead-but-is-in-more-desperate-need-of-a-new-showrunner/
An interesting criticism of The Weeping Angels by FeministFiction, The Angels Take Manhattan Review. (via fearliath)
Hit the nail on the head
This show had continuity for 50 years and I would really appreciate it Moffat would continue to do that, especially within his own “era” which he has complete creative control over.
Moffat is all bang and flash and zero substance. I used to like him, but for me at least, he’s slowly become the most actively disliked of all Who writers. And now I actively dislike him - and his inability to hold basic continuity over FOUR EPISODES is just the tip of the iceberg.
I loved the Angels in their Blink incarnation. But after that…
I just had this conversation with Rob! Moffatt reuses his monsters and aliens way too much. Love his his individual episodes and his work on Sherlock, but I’ll be happy when the show is handed over to someone else.
Rose Tyler costume is a go! I managed to find a pretty similar blue faux leather jacket. Now I just have to go buy a cheap blonde wig, because despite owning four blonde wigs, I don’t have access to a single one right now. :P
Pick 5 TV Shows Before You Start:
1. Who is your favourite character in #2?
2. Who is your least favourite character in #1?
I guess I’d probably have to say Mickey, though Martha and Amy were my two least favorite companions.
3. What’s your favourite episode of #4?
That’s hard to say since I watched each season in one shot. I guess I really liked it when Mary and Matthew are finally able to be together.
4. What’s your favourite season of #5?
Tough question. Season 2 was really good, but I think this past season had a lot of really good episodes.
5. What’s your favourite relationship in #1?
The Doctor and Rose
6. Who is your anti-relationship in #2?
7. How long have you watched #1?
9 months I think. (I know, I’m embarrassed.)
8. How did you become interest in #3?
I saw some ads for it in some of my comic books. I liked the premise, but thought it was going to be cheesy. I gave it a shot after it had been on the air for about 3 weeks. I thought the first episode was slow, but I continued watching. By the third episode, I was hooked.
9. Who is your favourite actor in #4?
Maggie Smith, hands down. I wish I had a grandmother like her. :D
10. Which show do you prefer, #1, #2 or #4?
Ughhh, they’re all so good. I suppose Doctor Who is my go-to show, though, since their are more episodes to choose from.
11. Which show have you seen more episodes of, #1 or #3?
Doctor Who. Only because there are more episodes of Doctor Who.
12. If you could be anyone from #4, who would it be?
Either Lady Sybil or Lady Mary. Sybil is my favorite, but Mary has great clothes…and Matthew.
13. How would you kill one of your favourite character in #5?
Why would I want to do that?! If I had to, it would be Troy and Abed and it would be in some great Inspector Spacetime themed episode. The two of them would save Greendale without anyone else knowing it, die and regenerate in new forms. And then they would have great adventures as the next Inspector and Constable.
14. Would a 3/4 crossover work?
No, but it’d be interesting to see them try.
15. Pick 2 characters in #1 that would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple.
This is so hard! I think it would have been interesting to see Donna with Vincent VanGogh, though. I wonder how that episode would have played out.
16. Overall, which show has the better cast, #3 or #5?
Tough again. I think I’d have to say Community. They work so well together.
17. Which has the better theme music, #2 or #4?
Aghhhh, impossible to choose! They’re both very, very good.
18. Give a random quote from #1.
"I’m the Doctor, I can save the world with a kettle and some string! And look! I’m wearing a vegtable!"
